JB trip, April 2006

I still can't imagine myself buying these in JB ! My friend said that I am being too obsessed with Indonesia now ! He said that Singapore got so many young and single men, why the need to master Bahasa Indonesia ? I think he is the one who is mad ! Learning Bahasa is necessary for my line of work as I am dealing with rich Indonesian decision makers now and it is important to build good rapport with them (which means to be able to communicate in their native language with them) in order to clinch the deal or even multiple deals (as they can afford it) !

If my friend had not stopped me, I would have bought the Korean and Japanese ones too ! To learn Korean (more importantly) for my regular dosage of Korean movies or dramas !

And according to my management, Indonesia and China have the largest market shares in the Asia Pacific region and they have the spending power so they are among the best to work with. The Japs and Koreans are a bit difficult though coz of the language barrier and they tend to adopt their own country's or Western countries' business partners. I find Singaporeans and Malaysians fine to liaise with too, for businesses and final decisions come faster than the Indonesians'. In a nutshell, I love working with the Indonesians and Chinese because they have "given" me multiple deals before :D

However, what I pine for most now is to be given a chance to work in HK ! I love HK for its similarity to Singapore and also mainly because I can speak Cantonese, Mandarin (the Chinese's Putonghua) and English well enough to survive there. I also adore HK's cool and nice climate, her many shopping and eating houses and many, many other stuff ! My Indonesian colleague joked that she should introduce me to her HK friend and make me stay in HK for a month to "see for myself how the HKers there live ! They live in a stressful environment and almost everything is in a very fast pace. Anyway, I am also considered a quarter of a HKer because both my maternal and paternal grandfathers came from Guangdong, off the southern province of China ! Not really HK but, well, almost right ?

OMG ! Why am I uttering all these now here ? I should be talking about my JB trip yesterday right ?? Hehehe...

Well, my JB trip was okay but not really satisfying coz I didn't really get what I wanted...

We wanted to catch Mission Impossible 3 or the Korean tearjeaker Daisy in City Square's cineplex but they dun have these 2 shows there yet :( So we watched "Failure to Launch" instead. It turned out to be a rather entertaining and funny romantic comedy, worth its ticket price :)

Bought quite an alarming number of stuff there; the 2 Indonesian learning books and CD as mentioned above, a white top, half a year's supply of monthly disposable contact lens (for only RM100!), a nice namecard holder and more than 30 ORIGINAL Korean, HK and English DVDs !!! Gosh ! May be going back to JB again next weekend with the same colleague coz we wanted very badly to catch Mission Impossible 3 or Daisy there ! We also discovered that there is a cheap KTV which offers buffet dinner with 3 hours of KTV singing for only RM35+++ per person ! :D I think I am one of the odd ones who only tend to shop a lot in overseas and seldom purchase stuff in Singapore.

When I am either very happy or very sad, I will do silly things like buying the whole shop home and spending like nobody's business....

  • According to Wikipedia, Indonesian and Malay are almost really the same languages, except separate for political reasons.

As you learn Indonesia, would your impression be that the difference comparable to British English and American English?
