HK WTO 13-18 Dec 05

The Sixth WTO Ministerial Conference is being held in Hong Kong, China, 13–18 December 2005. In general, ministerial conferences are the WTO’s highest decision-making body, meeting at least once every two years and providing political direction for the organization. This sixth conference will be vital for enabling the four-year-old Doha Development Agenda negotiations to move forward sufficiently to conclude the Round in 2006.

Mass rallies will be held on December 11, 13 and 18, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) will hold forums and cultural events on issues related to the WTO, including its impact on women, labour, drug supplies and poverty.

Emergency services are on high alert with police out in force patrolling on land and at sea, a day before the first scheduled protest against next week's World Trade Organisation summit here.

Police said they were mounting their biggest operation ever as the first of what is expected to be some 10,000 protesters began flooding into the city.

An estimated 9,000 police officers will be on duty during the sixth WTO ministerial summit, which opens on Tuesday and wraps up on December 18.

Three large demonstrations are planned during the meet, the first of which was scheduled for Sunday afternnon with a march from the city's downtown Victoria Park to government offices near the summit venue in Wanchai.

Police have also staged drills inside the centre itself should any protesters manage to break through the cordon.

The authorities here fear a repeat of the 1999 WTO ministerial conference in Seattle, which was disrupted by activists who smashed windows, sprayed graffiti and set rubbish skips alight.

I do wonder, how bad would the mass rallies or strikes be ?? Already, my company's cancelled one regional conference which was actually scheduled on the same dates as the WTO in HK.

1 Comments:

  • now with so much social unrest all over the world, think it's best to cancel it than to clash with WTO now...but hopefully things won't be as what might come.
